When Fear and Anxiety Strike

by | Oct 28, 2020

I know what it is like to feel paralyzed with fear. When all of the “what-ifs” are flooding your mind like rushing waves, so fast that you struggle to catch your breath. I’ve been there.

If you find yourself overcome with fear, you are not alone. Things that are a surprise to you are not a surprise to God. He is still on His throne, He sees you, He is for you, and He loves you more than you can ever comprehend.

When I find myself battling anxiety or fear it helps to take a moment to close my eyes and imagine Jesus right in front of me. His loving eyes, His comforting embrace, ready to carry the weight of all that I was trying to carry on my own.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 10:28-30

Can I ask you a question?

Do you see Jesus as ready to carry the weight of life with you as a loving friend and Savior or do you see Him as a distant God who places more weight and expectations on you?

There was a time in my life when I saw Jesus as someone who set a standard that I had to measure up to in order to have His love and approval. But, as I dug into scripture, I came to learn that He loves me unconditionally and I don’t have to earn my way to His love.

How does this truth change your perspective when approaching God in the midst of fear and anxiety?

He is a safe God, One who desires to walk WITH you, as close as your own skin. When you are experiencing fear and anxiety look to Him, share your burdens with Him, and know that He meets us right where we are, even in the midst of our messes.

I sought the Lord, and he answered me; He delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. Psalm 34:4-5

Today my friend, look to Him.
