What We All Need

by | Sep 29, 2021

We all want them.

We all need them.

Jesus had twelve of them.

What are these treasures from God?

Friends.

Mentors.

But not just people that mirror who we are. The body of Christ is multi-generational. It is important to have friends and mentors that are both older and younger than we are. On our podcast, Episode 32, Sally Knipe shares her wisdom on this topic; here is a snip-it of her wisdom beginning in Titus.

Titus 2:3-5 says, “Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, and to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.”

Imagine one arm up and the other arm down, reaching up to the next generation and reaching down to the one below us.

We need to reach up to a friend or mentor who can pour into us and teach us to live godly lives. In turn, we should also be reaching down to the next generation, coming alongside them to help them grow in their faith and navigate the highs and lows of life. We all have something in our story that can bring wisdom, hope, and encouragement to someone else as they are sorting through and processing their story.

Don’t believe the lie that you don’t have anything of value to share with someone even just two steps behind you.

God has a purpose for all of us. We just need to ask, “God where do you want me? Who do you want me to come alongside and walk hand-in-hand with as we journey on the path God has for us?” You could be exactly who someone else needs. We cannot be there for everybody. But God has specifically prepared you to be that good friend or encouraging mentor that someone is looking for.

How can we be the person that someone else needs in their life? Here are a few ways:

  • Listen well.
  • Ask good questions.
  • Provide a safe space for someone to share without judgment.
  • Walk alongside someone when they are going through hardship and trauma.
  • Encourage them in their roles in life ( i.e: school, marriage, parenting, dating, etc.).
  • Speak the truth in love.
  • Hold them accountable.

And if this is something that is missing in your life, Reclaimed Story is planning to launch our mentoring program and life groups in the new year! Feel free to email us if this is something you are looking for.  We will be happy to talk with you more about it. [email protected]
