Finding Comfort During Fear

by | Mar 3, 2021

When I was a little girl I was afraid of what was under my bed. I would fall asleep on my back, afraid that something would get me. I would get so worked up in my mind that I became convinced I would be a goner if I put my feet on the floor.

This probably had something to do with the fact that for a season, my cousin would put on a full grizzly bear costume and hide under my bed. Once I was asleep he would slowly creep out from under the bed and scare me half to death.

Long after my cousin stopped scaring me, there were nights that I yelled loudly to get my mom to come to me instead of having to put my feet on the floor to go to her. If my mom came to me, I remember that instantly everything was alright. I was suddenly safe, although nothing had changed except the fact my mom was with me.

Being afraid of a bear or a boogie man under my bed sounds silly now, but it was a very real fear when I was young.

As a mom myself, I enjoyed those simple moments with my young kids, when just being with them brought peace and comfort to their fears.

Even if this wasn’t your experience as a child, you probably have experienced fear.

Know that God delights in comforting you and giving you refuge from your fears.

With His feathers He will cover you, and under His wings you will find refuge. His truth will be your shield and armor. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day. Psalm 9:4-5

Can you picture that?

Climbing up into the lap of your Heavenly Father, hiding in the protection of His mighty arms, and feeling safe simply because of His presence.

He is with you.

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me, Your rod, and Your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:1-6

How might God’s presence transform your life?

When fears creep in (or storm in), remember that you are not alone in it

When fear tries to break in, remind yourself that the creator of the universe is as close to you as your skin.

When you are overwhelmed with all of the “What ifs” in life and it stirs up fear, remember that your Father knows the end from the beginning. He was with you. He is with you. He will always be with you.

Just as a child can find peace in the presence of their parent, may you find peace knowing that your Father is always with you.
