Most of us like certainty. We want to know where we are going, how things will turn out, and whether the next step will be worth the risk. I know I do.

If God handed me a five-year plan on an Excel sheet in a three-ring binder with color-coded tabs, I would be thrilled. But I also know exactly what I would do with it. I would grab that binder and run like someone had just handed me the Olympic torch.

Maybe that is why God does not always give us the whole plan.

Sometimes obedience comes before understanding. Instead of giving us the entire roadmap, God invites us to stay close enough to hear His voice and trust Him with the next step. Faith is not really about knowing the destination. It is about trusting the One who is leading us.

There have been many times when God has asked for my yes before I knew what would happen next.

After not seeing my biological father for 30 years, I felt God strongly prompt me to ask him a difficult question. I argued with God because I was afraid of what might happen. I thought the conversation could end in devastation.

Eventually, I obeyed.

Something hard but beautiful came from that moment, something I never could have seen coming. Experiences like that began building a foundation of trust in my life.

The same thing happened when God began calling me to speak. I was a back-row girl at church. I did not want the spotlight. When I was asked to step onto a platform and preach, I wrestled and argued before finally saying yes.

That first yes eventually led to speaking nationally. Even now, when I walk onto a stage, I imagine walking out there with God. He has my yes, but I want to know He is going with me.

It reminds me of Joshua 3. The priests carrying the ark had to put their feet into the water before they saw what God was going to do. Sometimes we want to see the water part first. We want confirmation, answers, and certainty before we move.

But sometimes we have to put our feet in the water first.

Of course, that raises another question: How do we know it is really God?

Discernment begins with relationship. It comes from knowing who God is and knowing His Word. If something does not align with His Word, we know it is not from Him.

John 15:5 has become especially meaningful to me. Jesus says He is the vine and we are the branches. Our job is to remain in Him. I love that because it does not say, “Figure everything out.” It says, “Remain in me.”

Direction flows from relationship. Fruit grows from connection.

One prayer I have been praying is simply, “Jesus, what are You inviting me into?”

That question changes my focus. Instead of only asking whether something is a yes or no, I can ask what God wants to do in me through either answer. If He gives me what I am asking for, what is He inviting me into? If He says no, what is He inviting me into? If He says wait, what is He inviting me into?

Sometimes the decision is not even the biggest thing God is doing. Sometimes He is working on my pride, my ego, my fear, or my need for control.

Following Jesus has never been boring. Sometimes it is terrifying. It stretches us, but it is worth it.

I would rather live an unpredictable life with Him than a predictable life without the adventure. We cannot always see the whole picture or understand how He will connect everything together. What we can do is take the next step.

For me, that means choosing curiosity over certainty.

I still wrestle with God. Sometimes I argue. Sometimes I tell Him why I think His idea sounds terrible. But my desire is to become so convinced of God’s goodness that even when I wrestle, even when I am unsure, and even when the adventure feels terrifying, my heart keeps coming back to yes.

Certainty is not found in knowing exactly where life is going. It is found in knowing the One we are clinging to.

So when you find yourself standing at the edge of the unknown, keep clinging to Him. Keep trusting. Keep putting your feet in the water.

And keep giving Him your yes.

It may feel scary in the moment, but the adventure with Him is worth it.
