Held in Hope: Finding Jesus in the Midst of Pregnancy and Infant Loss

Some losses are almost impossible to put into words. Pregnancy loss, miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant loss often leave parents carrying a grief that is both deeply personal and largely unseen. While many families experience this heartbreak, countless women suffer in silence, unsure if anyone truly understands.

For Kayla Fowler and Brittanie Freshour, that silence became something they were no longer willing to accept.

Kayla’s journey included the loss of four babies. Each pregnancy carried its own story of hope, heartbreak, unanswered questions, and moments of wrestling with God. After her first miscarriage, she remembers sitting on her daughter’s nursery floor with her Bible open, desperately searching for something to hold onto. She found herself clinging to Jeremiah 29:11, believing God’s promise of hope and a future.

Later, during an ultrasound, she sensed the Lord impress on her heart that the promise was not for her baby, but for her. God was reminding her that although she would walk through unimaginable pain, His plans for her life had not ended.

Her losses were marked by both compassionate care and painful experiences. Some medical professionals met her grief with kindness, while others unintentionally deepened her pain with words that failed to acknowledge what she was carrying. Through it all, Kayla learned the importance of allowing herself to grieve.

One piece of advice from her mother-in-law became foundational.

“You need to grieve this, and it’s okay to go through every stage of grief.”

Those words shaped not only her healing, but also how she now walks alongside other women.

As the losses continued, Kayla found herself asking difficult questions. She prayed boldly for healing, fasted, gathered others to pray with her, and believed God for miracles. When the answers she longed for did not come, she faced the painful reality that sometimes God’s answer is no.

Learning to trust Him through those moments became one of the deepest parts of her journey. Looking back, she says that worship, prayer, and a community of believers surrounding her and her husband were what kept her walking with Jesus.

Brittanie’s story was different, but equally heartbreaking.

After an uncomplicated first pregnancy, she was expecting another healthy baby girl named Sadie. At thirty-six weeks, she noticed something was wrong when her normally active daughter stopped moving. During a routine appointment, the medical team was unable to find a heartbeat.

The news changed everything.

As she prepared to deliver her daughter, Brittanie received a Scripture that became an anchor for her soul. It reminded her that after suffering, God Himself would restore, strengthen, and establish her.

She describes that day as the worst day of her life, yet also one where she experienced the peace of God in a way she had never known before. In the middle of overwhelming grief, she felt the Lord sitting with her, giving her peace that surpassed understanding.

The loss transformed her relationship with God. What had once been a comfortable faith became a deeply personal dependence on Him.

Even in her sorrow, Brittanie began asking God a simple question.

“What is Sadie’s purpose?”

As time passed, she watched God begin to answer that question. Family members grew closer to Christ, her own faith deepened, and opportunities emerged to encourage others facing similar heartbreak.

Out of both women’s journeys came Held in Hope, a ministry created to ensure no woman walks through pregnancy or infant loss alone.

Their commitment was simple. Even if only one woman came, they would be there.

Sometimes their meetings include Bible study. Other times, they simply sit together, listen, pray, and become the hands and feet of Jesus for someone carrying unimaginable grief.

Their message is not that the pain disappears.

Their message is that Jesus meets people in it.

For women carrying the weight of loss, they offer something many desperately need: a safe place to be seen, understood, and reminded that hope is still possible.

When asked to describe their journey in a single word, Brittanie answered without hesitation.

Hope.

Not wishful thinking, but the confident hope found in Christ. The hope that one day every tear will be wiped away, every question will be answered, and every child who is safely in the arms of Jesus will be seen again.

For those walking through loss today, that hope remains available. Even in heartbreak, God draws near to the brokenhearted, holds them through their grief, and reminds them they never have to walk through it alone.
