Sometimes the people God places in our path may seem like chance encounters, but they can become part of a much bigger story.
For Claudia Watts, those people appeared throughout her life. She was born and raised in Mexico and came to the United States just before turning 18. She married young, became a mother, and later spent a few years as a single mom before marrying her husband. Although Claudia believed in God, she says she did not truly understand what Jesus had done for her.
Over the years, God continued placing people in her life who talked to her about Him. Her husband encouraged prayer and introduced her to a Christian church. Later, a nurse Claudia worked with began sharing stories about how God had helped her family. Something about her love and kindness caused Claudia to lean in and listen. Eventually, Claudia and her family began attending church regularly.
Worship and hearing the Word began doing something in Claudia’s heart.
She would find herself crying in church without fully understanding why. Looking back, she recognizes that she was experiencing the presence of God. She bought a Bible and even felt led to be baptized, yet she still struggled to fully surrender. She describes that season as having one foot with God while still holding tightly to control of her own life.
Then life became incredibly difficult.
After injuring her shoulder, Claudia spent nearly two years in significant pain while doctors tried to determine what was wrong. Eventually, the pain traveled into her neck and head. One night, she woke up terrified that she was going to die.
That night became the beginning of months filled with anxiety, depression, fear, and hopelessness. Claudia could barely eat or sleep. She lost a significant amount of weight and struggled to function as a wife and mother.
Although she had a loving husband, beautiful daughters, a home, and a career, inside she felt completely empty.
Even more painful were the thoughts she kept hidden. Claudia began believing she was unworthy, that she did not deserve her family, and that God was angry with her. Shame kept her from telling others what was happening inside her.
Then came a Tuesday Claudia would never forget.
After calling out of work, she drove to her church parking lot and sat crying, desperate for God to help her. She saw a pastor getting out of her car and ran to her.
For the first time, Claudia told someone what was really happening in her heart and mind.
The pastor listened patiently and kindly. Then she explained the grace of God and the gift of salvation in a way Claudia finally understood.
There was nothing Claudia had to earn. She simply needed to receive the gift Jesus had already given.
The pastor opened her Bible to Psalm 27: “The Lord is my light and my salvation. Why should I fear?” Those words met Claudia directly in the darkness and fear she had been experiencing.
That night, something changed.
For the first time in months, Claudia felt hope. She could imagine a future again.
The next morning, February 10, 2010, Claudia woke up overwhelmed by the love of God. She lifted her arms toward heaven and finally said yes.
She surrendered her life to Jesus.
That yes changed everything.
It did not mean Claudia would never experience another struggle. Instead, she says she now walks through difficult seasons knowing she is deeply loved and holding onto the hope and promises of God. Her perspective on life changed. She began savoring life differently and recognizing that she was here for a purpose.
More than 16 years later, Claudia can look back at the life she almost could not imagine continuing. She has enjoyed more than 20 years of marriage, watched her daughters become adults, welcomed three grandchildren, and found purpose in serving others through her work.
Her story now carries a message for anyone who feels trapped in darkness: Do not keep it to yourself.
Reach out to someone you love and trust. Talk to a family member, friend, pastor, counselor, doctor, therapist, or someone who can help. Claudia wants others to know that seeking help is okay and that no one is beyond hope.
The story that once felt filled with hopelessness has become a story Claudia now uses to offer hope to someone else.
Your life matters. Your story matters. And the chapter you are living today does not have to be the end of your story.
