Are You Utilizing Teamwork In Your Life?

by | Aug 20, 2020

Who could have imagined that the entire world would share the experience we are having today? In many ways, I feel a lot closer to people around the world as this pandemic has touched each of our lives in some way.

Due to the speed of modern communication, we can find out what is happening on the other side of the world in almost real-time. However, fast communication has its downside. We see everything. The good, the bad, and the ugly. We are informed within moments of a riot breaking out, a fire ravaging a city, the death of a child, and more.

This instant communication can leave us feeling burdened for all of the negative events that are going on in our city, country, and world. That feeling of heaviness is compounded by things going on in our lives and the lives of those we love.

At times, the weight can get heavy. There are days that I just want to sit down, watch a lighthearted comedy, and eat popcorn and M&Ms. Just to disconnect from all the hard things that I see on a daily basis.

How do we handle the constant stream of crises that we see on social media, the tv, and other sources?

In our last post, we talked about Jesus’ words in Matthew 11:28 that give us refuge when we feel tired and disconnected.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

This week we are going to look at the next verse:

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:29

This passage brings comfort and eases a heavy heart. When we understand what a yoke is, and what we are to learn from analogy, it gives us a beautiful picture of how to engage with Jesus and lighten the load that we carry.

A yoke is a wooden object that joins two animals together as a team. Their combined strength can enable them to pull a load that would be too difficult for one animal to pull by itself.

A yoke makes the team inseparable. Together they are stronger, their burden lightened and their task easier.

The word “take” is from the Greek word “Airo”, meaning to deliberately lift or to take up. The word Jesus used here implies that we deliberately invite Jesus into the harness so He can help us pull the plow.

Chances are you are not pulling a plow. However, you are carrying the weight of various burdens. The weight of finding out about a natural disaster, a local crisis, an unexpected diagnosis, or a financial misstep.

How heavy is the burden you are carrying?

You are not meant to carry it alone. Jesus comes alongside you and joins you in your life, your marriage, your family, and your struggles.

If you were moving, you wouldn’t attempt to lift your couch, pool table, or dresser by yourself, would you? No! You would ask a friend for help. Teamwork makes everything easier.

Invite Jesus into these areas of your life. Those areas where things have happened to you, around you, or even the areas where you made choices that led to heavy burdens that you now carry.

At times we can believe that if we caused it, we have to fix it before we can turn to Jesus. That could not be farther from the truth. Wherever you are today, invite Him in. You do not have to carry this alone.

Your prayer may look something like this.

Jesus, your Word says that you willingly take on our burdens and that you will give me rest. Right now, I am carrying (insert your care,)  I know you are with me in this, and I am intentionally inviting you in to share the load with me. I pray for solutions, strategies, and most of all to depend on you, lean into you, and feel your peace over this situation. Thank you that I do not have to do it alone because you are with me and carry it with me. In Jesus’ name. Amen

Lean on Him and He will share the weight of what you are carrying. Rest in the fact that when you are yoked together with Jesus, you and He are inseparable and even the most dreaded loads can become easier and lighter.

Rest for my soul. What a wonderful thing! I needed that reminder today! I’m blessed that I don’t have to deal with a lot of the challenges these days because of my age, but the constant barrage of negative news…the pain that others have to endure…makes my heart heavy at times. Such a great verse for these days.
