Biblical Foods That Nourish the Body

Honoring God Through What We Eat

Ever since reading Dr. Rex Russell’s book What the Bible Says About Healthy Living, along with studying Scripture, I find that I am no longer as confused about which foods are truly healthy to eat. I’ve learned to stay humble, knowing that my wisdom is not the same as God’s wisdom. Each time I follow His guidance, I find that I am not only healthier, but also more at peace and content.

As I shared previously, God’s design for food is simple and intentional, and those same principles still apply today.

We are not saved by what we eat, but as we grow in our relationship with the Lord, we naturally desire to honor Him in every area of our lives, including how we care for our bodies.

God’s Provision Through Food

Throughout Scripture, we see the kinds of foods God provided for His people. These foods were simple, natural, and nourishing.

In Deuteronomy 8:8, the land God promised is described as:

“A land of wheat and barley, vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey.”

These foods reflect a pattern that is still relevant today. They are whole foods, grown from the earth, and rich in what the body needs to function well.

Everything we have and eat ultimately comes from the Lord. James 1:17

Biblical Foods to Focus On

As I studied Scripture along with Dr. Rex Russell’s book What the Bible Says About Healthy Living, I began to see a clear pattern of foods that consistently support health and strength. These are not meant to be rules, but guidance that reflects God’s design for nourishment.

Some of the key foods include:

Fruits and Vegetables
Fresh foods such as leafy greens, berries, apples, and other produce in their natural state. We have a small garden on our patio, and I have an aeroponic tower garden indoors.

Whole Grains
Foods like wheat and barley, preferably in their natural and less processed forms. It is also important to recognize that modern wheat has changed significantly, and some individuals may be sensitive to it, especially those with celiac or gluten intolerance.

Healthy Fats
Olive oil, along with foods such as nuts, avocados, butter, and yogurt, which provides nourishment and supports the body when used in balance.

Protein Sources
Fish, eggs, and meats prepared simply rather than heavily processed.

Legumes, Nuts, and Seeds
Beans, lentils, almonds, and seeds that provide natural nourishment.

Natural Sweeteners (in moderation)
Honey instead of refined sugar, used in moderation.

Rather than focusing on strict rules, it is often helpful to make simple substitutions, choosing foods that are closer to how God created them instead of those that are highly processed or refined.

Putting This Into Practice

For many women, the challenge is not knowing what is healthy; it is knowing how to apply it in everyday life.

It does not have to be complicated. Small, consistent changes can make a meaningful difference.

You might begin with simple steps like:

  • Adding a vegetable to each meal
  • Choosing fruit instead of processed snacks
  • Cooking more meals at home using simple ingredients
  • Replacing refined oils with a good quality olive oil
  • Drinking more water throughout the day
  • Plant a garden, even if it’s a small one

These are not drastic changes, but over time, they can support better energy, clarity, and overall well-being.

The goal is not perfection, but to move closer to the way God designed food to nourish the body.

Wisdom, Not Legalism

Jesus made it clear:

“It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person…” (Matthew 15:11)

Our relationship with God is not determined by food.

At the same time, what we eat still matters, not for salvation, but for stewardship.

Food affects how we feel, how we think, and how we function each day. When we choose nourishing foods, we are supporting the body God created.

This is not about rules. It is about wisdom.

A Final Encouragement

When we begin to see things through this lens, God’s wisdom becomes steady and trustworthy in our daily lives.

The foods we see throughout Scripture reflect His care and provision. When we choose to follow these principles, we are simply choosing to walk in His wisdom.

As Scripture reminds us:

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)

Even the way we eat can reflect a heart that honors Him. Hallelujah.

Prayer

Lord, we understand that the most important thing is to care for our souls and to have a personal relationship with You. Thank You for the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Help us to seek You first in all things. Amen.

Reflection

What is one simple change you can make this week to align your eating with God’s wisdom?
